Community Museum Project

Since 2002, the Community Museum Project (www.hkcmp.org) has developed the Street as Museum project series, aiming to scavenge, take stock, visualize and disseminate local knowledge and values of our everyday cultures. As a curatorial collective from Hong Kong, the CMP researches on and publishes about indigenous creativity, curates exhibitions on local materials and visual culture, as well as discovering “lesser designs” in urban settings (as in the In Search of Marginalized Wisdom Craftspeople Exhibition).

The CMP does not work under the museum proper with any “elitist” collection, but works together with concerned communities to represent and articulate pressing issues behind their livelihood practices, amid incessant city gentrification and social changes—as in the projects of Lee Tung Street and Riverside Scene of local Agriculture. In addition, the Museum of Complaints of the Anyang Public Art Project showcased here presents participatory research and civic expressions. By design, these research cum exhibition projects not only attempt to visualize communities in our urban environment, but also provide visual forms of reification that help articulate the under-represented histories and indigenous creativity in daily life.
