台大哲學系畢業,美國Rochester Institute of Technology影像藝術碩士。現任國立高雄大學創意設計與建築學系專任助理教授,曾任台北市文化局研究員、輔大與台藝大講師。

 

作品曾於台灣、日本、香港、中國大陸、美國、英國、義大利、以色列等地展出。作品探討自我、性別認同、身份認同、第三世界的女性勞工、外籍配偶等議題,深具社會批判性。

 

自2005至2010年以亞洲新娘為題,深入探索這些新移民的處境,正視其自我意識與身份認同;該系列作品〈望向彼方─亞洲新娘之歌〉曾獲第九届台新藝術獎視覺藝術類入圍。

 

2012年出版《女性影像書寫—侯淑姿影像創作集(1989-2009)》,該書獲2013金點設計獎。2013年發表有關左營眷村的影像系列作品。

 

數年來秉持女性主義者的創作方向,漸漸地擴大為對階級、族群、社區等台灣社會政治議題的省思,近年創作發表延續了一貫的社會性關照。

 

 

Shur-tzy Hou graduated from the Department of Philosophy at National Taiwan University and has an Imaging Arts Master of Fine Art from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Hou is currently working as assistant professor at the Department Creative Design and Architecture at National University of Kaohsiung.

 

Her work has been exhibited in Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, China, the U.S, the U.K, Italy and Vienna. Hou is a highly regarded image artist. Her works explore issues related to gender identification, self-identification, and third-world female laborers; thus her works voice and reflect social-economic issues of modern Taiwan.

 

Ms. Hou’s recent work focuses on Asian foreign brides in Taiwan, in which she explores the lives of these female immigrants, their self-consciousness and struggle with identity.

 

For the past few years, Mrs. Hou has expanded her interests from feminist movement to concerns on social classes, ethnic, community and other social-political issues in Taiwan. The works shown at this exhibition in the Kaoshiung Museum of Fine Arts is a sequel to her broad interests in social themes.

Look toward the other side-Asian Foreign Brides in Taiwan

 

 

大量東南亞外籍配偶的移入,形成了台灣新一代的多種族色彩,然而這些女性新移民在台灣社會中卻難以擺脫種種負面的刻板印象,她們的母國文化也在父權體制與台灣文化優越論的基調下,隱晦而蒼白;自2005年起,侯淑姿以「亞洲新娘」為題發展三個系列的作品,含括「越界與流移─亞洲新娘之歌(I)」(2005)、「越界與認同─亞洲新娘之歌(II)」(2008)與「望向彼方─亞洲新娘之歌(III)」(2009)三部曲。

 

在與她們的對話間,侯淑姿認知到飄洋過海、遠嫁台灣對她們的生命所帶來的改變與衝擊,在跨越地理的邊界的同時,她們也在不同文化的交疊處流移。外籍配偶由東南亞嫁至台灣,經歷了身份重構的過程,異國的婚姻、不對等的經濟關係往往造成與母國及家鄉的隔離與斷裂,然而,她們卻奮力積極融入台灣,譜出了一首首動人的生命之歌。
 

作品希望藉由七位住在屏東地區的外配與她們的越南原生家庭的影像與第一人稱的獨白,跳脫社會對外籍新娘定型標籤化的「他者」的觀點,探討這些外籍配偶的生命歷程,正視其自我意識與認知,並試圖呈現台越婚姻關係圖像中文化、階級的差異、困境與希望。

 

 

The large-scale immigration of spouses from Southeast Asia into Taiwan has contributed significantly to the multi-cultural and diverse nature of Taiwanese society. However, to this day it remains difficult for these new immigrants to shake off the negative stereotypes imposed upon them, and the cultures and traditions of their countries of origin are often reduced to a hidden existence in our largely patriarchal and chauvinistic society.

 

In light of the plight of these foreign spouses, Lule Shur-tzy Hou began to develop her ideas for an “Asian Brides Trilogy”, starting with “Border-crossing / Diaspora—Song of Asian Foreign Brides in Taiwan (I) (2005), which was followed by “Border-crossing / Cultural Identities—Song of Asian Foreign Brides in Taiwan (II) (2008), and finally “Looking Toward the Other Side: Songs of Asian Foreign Brides in Taiwan (III). Her work consists of images featuring seven Pingtung-based foreign spouses, and their families back home in Vietnam. In her efforts to explore the lives and souls of these foreign spouses, she deliberately presents them as first-person narrators to eliminate the stereotype of treating the foreign brides as “others” on the fringe of our society. Hou attempts to present the cultural differences, dilemmas and hopes that lie within Taiwanese-Vietnamese marital relationships.
